Honda Maintenance Minder codes
Honda's Maintenance Minder replaces the printed mileage table. It watches how the engine is used, estimates the remaining oil life and shows a code on the dash when service is due. The table below is Honda's own list of codes.

- If a Maintenance Minder message does not appear more than 12 months after the display is reset, change the engine oil every year.
- If you drive in dusty conditions, replace the air cleaner element every 15,000 miles (24,000 km).
- If you drive primarily in urban areas with high concentrations of soot in the air from industry and diesel-powered vehicles, replace the dust and pollen filter every 15,000 miles (24,000 km).
- Driving in mountainous areas at very low vehicle speeds results in higher transmission temperatures. If you regularly drive your vehicle under these conditions, have the transmission fluid changed every 25,000 miles (40,000 km).
- Applies to models with a rear differential (AWD); check your owner's manual for your trim.
- If a Maintenance Minder indicator does not appear more than 36 months after the display for item 7 is reset, change the brake fluid every 3 years.
A dash code combines a letter with digits: B12 means main item B plus sub items 1 and 2.
How to read a code like B12
Read the first character as the main item and every digit after it as a sub item. So B12 is main item B (oil and filter with the inspection list) plus sub item 1 (rotate tires) plus sub item 2 (air cleaner, dust and pollen filter, drive belt). A1 is an oil change plus a tire rotation.
When the message appears
| Message | Oil life | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance Due Soon | 15% to 6% | The engine oil is approaching the end of its service life; the listed items should be inspected and serviced soon. |
| Maintenance Due Now | 5% to 1% | The oil has almost reached the end of its service life; service the listed items as soon as possible. |
| Maintenance Past Due | 0%, negative distance shown | The oil life has passed. A negative distance appears after driving over 10 miles (U.S. models) and blinks. The listed items must be inspected and serviced immediately. |

Frequently asked questions
What do Honda Maintenance Minder codes mean?
A code is a main item letter (A or B) plus sub item digits. A replaces the engine oil. B replaces the oil and filter and adds inspections. The digits add a tire rotation (1), air cleaner, dust and pollen filter and drive belt inspection (2), transmission fluid (3), spark plugs and valve clearance (4), engine coolant (5), rear differential fluid where fitted (6) and brake fluid (7).
What does Honda B12 service mean?
B12 is main item B plus sub items 1 and 2: replace the engine oil and oil filter, inspect the front and rear brakes and the other items on the B list, rotate the tires, replace the air cleaner element and the dust and pollen filter, and inspect the drive belt.
What is the difference between code A and code B?
Code A is an oil change only. Code B is an oil and filter change plus an inspection list covering brakes, tie rod ends, steering gearbox and boots, suspension, driveshaft boots, brake hoses and lines, fluid levels, exhaust and fuel lines.
When does the Maintenance Minder show a code?
The items appear when remaining engine oil life drops to 15% (Due Soon). At 5% to 1% the message is Due Now, and after driving more than 10 miles past zero a blinking negative distance shows and the message is Past Due.
Can I still change the oil every year?
Honda says that if no Minder message appears more than 12 months after the display was reset, change the engine oil every year.
How often is brake fluid changed on a Honda?
Sub item 7 replaces brake fluid. Honda says that if no indicator for item 7 appears more than 36 months after that display was reset, change the brake fluid every 3 years.
Does the code list differ between Honda models?
Slightly. The 2024 CR-V guide lists sub item 6 (rear differential fluid) and the 2022 Accord guide does not. The main items and sub items 1 to 5 and 7 match in both.
